Nightmare City Halloween 2025 is dedicated to...

Gailard Sartain

18 September 1943 - 19 June 2025

Dr. Mazeppa Pompazoidi

The Incredible Dr. Mazeppa Pompazoidi's Uncanny Film Festival and Camp Meeting debuted Saturday 2 May 1970 on KOTV Channel 6 in Tulsa Oklahoma and ran two seasons, ending 26 August 1972. The show moved to KTUL Channel 8 on 16 September 1972 airing for one more seasons, ending summer 1973.

Mazeppa and company performed madcap, and often improvisational, comedy sketches during commercial breaks of late night horror and comedy films. To say the show was hysterically creative would be an understatement. The show was immensely popular and immediately gained a cult following!

Mazeppa - Movie Intro - Halloween Spoof (1972)

Halloween Spoof was one of my very favorite segments from the show!

Gailard Sartain, Davis Rules publicity shot, 1991

After the Uncanny Film Festival, Sartain went on to have a lucrative acting career in television and film.

He appeared on Hee Haw for 20 years; was a feature character in The Hey Vern, It's Ernest television show and Ernest film franchise; and appeared in many notable films such as The Buddy Holly Story (1978), The Outsiders (1983), The Big Easy (1986), Mississippi Burning (1988), The Grifters (1990), Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), Getting Even With Dad (1994), The Spitfire Grill (1996), The Replacements (2000), and Elizabethtown (2005).

Sartain was also an extremely talented artist. One of his most famous works was the cover art for Leon Russell's 1975 album, Will O' The Wisp.

Personally, Gailard Sartain has been a life-long hero of mine since the launch of The Uncanny Film Festival & Camp Meeting. I saw Mazeppa twice at Tulsa State Fair appearances, collected his two posters, and the classic single Scope Them Turkeys Out b/w What's So Funny.

In 1970 I talked to Mazeppa on KAKC Contact; and in 1973 I appeared with friends on the The Uncanny Film Festival as part of the Lip-Syncing Extravaganza, when we performed Tell Laura I Love Her by Sha Na Na.

I have maintained a Mazeppa Pompazoidi Tribute page online for nearly 25 years; and have been an avid fan following Sartain's TV and Film career, viewing most everything he has appeared in.

Lawzee with Love!
